Twin voices in contemporary guitar, Steve Gunn and the Black Twig Pickers have long been admirers of one another's work.
Steeped in the vivid voices of Americana, there's a sense of truth to their work, a sense of history peeking over your shoulder.
Working together, new album 'Seasonal Hire' is a dense, hypnotic collaboration. At times explicitly beautiful at others deliberately ugly, it seems that through attacking tradition Steve Gunn and the Black Twig Pickers are able to tap into the spirits which underpin it.
Out on February 23rd, 'Seasonal Hire' is a wonderful meeting of minds. Clash is able to premiere new track 'Trailways Ramble' and it's an intoxicating example of the talent on show.
Almost reminiscent of Led Zeppelin's acoustic side, there's a heaviness to the recording, a density, a feeling of weight to each plucked string.
Steve Gunn's rare vocal turn lends a soft, introspective quality but it's the near cinematic arrangement which shines through – truly, this is the aural equivalent of a desolate Western vista.
