Premiere: Sons Of Kemet – ‘In Memory Of Samir Awad’

London-based jazz experimentalists...

Jazz is a term which comes with enormous cultural expectations.

In reality, though, it's a wonderfully vague terms. A swing band playing Duke Ellington is jazz – so, too, is an out there ensemble, skronking their way to high heaven.

Sons Of Kemet are – loosely, tangentially – jazz. Spawned from London's improvisational scene, the group boast some stellar musicians including members of (deep breath) Polar Bear, Hello Skinny, Melt Yourself Down, Mulatu Astatke and the Heliocentrics, and Sun Ra’s Arkestra.

New album 'Lest We Forget What We Came Here To Do' will be released on September 25th, with Clash able to premiere something special.

'In Memory Of Samir Awad' is sheer molten creativity, a blur of percussion effects and seismic horns which shuffle between John Coltrane and Fela Kuti.
