The Black Country is a long way from the Appalachians.
It's a different continent, a different culture, a different way of life. Yet Scott Matthews manages to make the two seem just a few miles apart, with his music recalling the sounds of the American South yet with a British twist which keeps it true to his roots.
2006 debut album 'Passing Stranger' established the template, with Scott Matthews' gently moving songwriting matched to sparse yet warm arrangements.
Touring extensively, the singer has been able to hook up with the likes of Robert Plant and Alison Krauss, Snow Patrol and Foo Fighters.
Yet Matthews continues to move forward. New album 'Home Part 1' arrives on October 6th, with the songwriter due to preview his material with an intimate show at The Social on August 18th.
Ahead of this, Clash is able to unveil a brand new track. 'Virginia' revolves around a simple, circular guitar riff, with the arrangement allowing plenty of space for Scott Matthews' voice.
Soft yet assuring, it's a track steeped in Americana yet could only come from the UK. Check it out below.
