Luke West hails from North London, and is part of a community of producers and musicians who thrive on the new.
Freshly inaugurated label Sans Absence is set to house the artist's next EP, with 'OOOOO' taking things in a percussive, darkly futuristic direction.
Out on January 22nd, the project began as a means to stamp out the identity of Sans Absence before pushing into some quite unexpected places.
Label founder Akito (Subskank/Tight Knit):
"With the beginning of the label I really wanted to go with the idea of stripped back, borrowing rhythmically from the likes of UK Funky mixed with a slightly more de-saturated sound palette, continuing the genre into a darker, more moody direction. Luke’ s been making and playing me tracks for the last few years so I asked him if he’ d be up for writing and releasing the first EP with this in mind, so I sent him a folder of older music that I was really into; but thought could be pushed further in terms of direction, a few weeks later ‘OOOOO’ was birthed, then the other 2 tracks plus remixes over the following few months."
Clash is able to air the title track, and it borrows from the rhythmic sparsity that made UK Funky so deliriously infectious. There's an intensity to the production, though, that echoes the work of producers more commonly associated with grime – think Wen, for example, or even Roska's darker moments.
