Grime and dancehall may be (largely) separated by the small matter of the Atlantic ocean, but the two sounds do share certain characteristics.
Both are system music, music which is designed to be felt – ideally shuddering in the rib cage – as well as heard. Grime has always been vocal about its debt to the Jamaican soundsystem lineage, while dancehall is forever careful to give its cousins in the UK a shout out.
Lady Chann earned her spurs the hard way. Fusing a soulful singing voice with the ability to spit as hard as any male MC, the dancehall artist has developed a global reputation.
New cut 'Knowledge' pits Lady Chann against grime pioneer Flow Dan. The tone and timbre of their voices seem to hook round one another, building in intensity while the producer – heavyweight sub-low tones, for the most part – writhes and belches underneath.
An imposing clash between two vital MCs, 'Knowledge' will be released on July 26th, but you can check it out below.
