There's an element to Harleighblu's new single 'Who's That Girl' which seems to perfectly sum up the young vocalist.
It's the vinyl crackle. No doubt painstakingly added in the studio, it indicates that Harleighblu knows her influences, that she is rooted in classic soul – Aretha Franklin, Bettye Swann, Particia Holloway.
Yet it's also a strikingly modern thing to do. By utilising technology to disrupt like this, she's clearly nodding towards hip hop, towards the impact producers such as J Dilla had on the manner in which we disseminate the past.
Of course, it helps that 'Who's That Girl' is a gorgeous, soulful hymn. Due for release on October 13th via Tru Thoughts, it comes equipped with the Peshay remix of 'I Believe' and the Corsair re-work of 'Love Like This' – which is also a free download.
Completed by the Sware remix of 'Sittin' By The Window' it's a fine package, and one you can stream first on Clash. Check it out below:
Harleighblu is set to support Mistajam at a special Nottingham show next Friday (October 17th). Fancy going? Win tickets via Clash in our competition.
