UK garage may well be back, but why is it the frothy, pop-centred side of the sound which is getting all the attention?
Rising from the same system culture which spawned jungle, UK garage always had an aggressive side, one that matched the mood of the times.
Ella Eyre seems to grasp this. Already adding guest vocals to an unrelenting number one single from Rudimental, the London born singer is set to strike out on her own and she’s not taking any prisoners.
“I’ve always wanted to hit people in the face with my music, rather than tickle them” she commented recently, and it’s a demand which filters through her new EP.
“If I was to describe my music as a colour, it would be red – it’s loud, energetic, brutal, brutally honest at some points, and vulnerable, too” explains Eyre.
Out on December 15th, the EP is led by ‘Deeper’ – a soulful, rugged cut helmed by producer Two Inch Punch. Ahead of this, though, Clash is able to premiere a brand new remix courtesy of Friend Within.
Adding some sharp yet sweet textures, Friend Within takes ‘Deeper’ in a straight ahead dancefloor direction with real house overtones. Listen to it now.
Ella Eyre will release her new EP on December 15th. The singer returns to the UK on November 28th for a one off headline show at Notting Hill Arts Club in London.
