Premiere: David Carretta – ‘System’

Muscular electronics...

French electronic music is often tagged as one style, one genre.

The reality, though, is somewhat different. The Gallic touch has found its way into unexpected places, with all manner of new voices helping to expand what it means to craft French electronics.

David Carretta is perhaps one of the most influential voices France has produced. Returning to ZONE Records – run by The Hacker and Gestaffelstein – new EP ‘Land Of Sin’ is a strident, impossible to place return.

Five tracks of chunky electronics, the producer flits between 80s machine funk to Kraftwerk, early 90s IDM to classic electro.

Out this week, Clash is able to premiere muscular new track ‘System’. Machine musick for the 21st century, there’s an oddly nostalgic tone – it’s there in the sci-fi backdrop, the distorted vocals and the noir tone. Yet David Carretta isn’t one to look back, instead playing with these influences, smearing them into new shapes and shades.
