Legendary Bristol group Portishead could be set to release new material soon with Geoff Barrow confirming the band are in the studio.
Portishead aren’t know for their strident work rate. Releasing two award winning albums in the 90s the band then teamed up with an American orchestra before going into hibernation for a decade.
Returning last year with ‘Third’ it was clear that while Portishead had evolved they had lost none of their ground breaking ambition. Released to widespread acclaim it featured a raft of new influences alongside their trademark trip hop signatures.
However in a new twist it seems that fans may not have long to wait for new material. Leader Geoff Barrow is currently tied up running his own label and launching the new group Beak, but in his spare time he has been assisting the production of new Portishead material.
Speaking to NME the producer stated that with Portishead now free from any kind of record deal the band were capable of working on their own terms.
Declining to name specifics about the new material Barrow instead claimed that Portishead had “big plans” for a new project coming “from a different angle”.
Referring to the band’s lack of a record deal Geoff Barrow claimed: “We are publishing-free and label-free at the moment, so we’re kind of… well, we’re free!”
In an interview last December Geoff Barrow claimed that Portishead claimed they were ready to ‘plough onto’ recording material for their fourth album.
