Legendary Bristol trip hop group Portishead are set to release a new single titled “The Rip” on June 9th, it has been announced.
The group went on hiatus, before releasing comeback album “Third” – their first in eleven years – earlier this year. With a more industrial sound than its predecessors, the band chose the harsh, militaristic “Machine Gun” to be the first single from the album.
“The Rip” has more in common with the band’s earlier sound, but remains typically dark. Portishead became one of the most acclaimed bands in the 90s with their mixture of hip hop aesthetics and obscure samples. Debut album “Dummy” won the prestigious Mercury music prize and the group’s self-titled follow up is widely regarded as a classic.
“The Rip” will be released on June 9th.
