Plain Mister Smith Merges Forces with Findlay Brown on ‘Grade Five And The Axe’

The enigmatic song-writer and instrumentalist takes his listener on a journey...

Plain Mister Smith is marking his return with ‘Grade Five And The Axe’, released via Popoganda Records

Merging forces with Findlay Brown, the track spans across indie, folk and pop, fine-tuning a balance between traditional and contemporary elements. Rich in its acoustics and cutting percussion, Brown’s harmonious notes offer a distinct warmth, whilst Smith prides a vivid and vibrant lyricism. Together, they weave between courageous instrumentation, building momentum with each verse.

Plain Mister Smith offers a new venture for Mark Jowett, developing an enigmatic artistic identity that welcomes experimentation. Dressed up to the nines in a slick tuxedo with a globe for a head, the masked song-writer takes his listener on an adventure, piecing together moments of escapism along the way. Travelling between Canada and the UK, Smith now pushes forward his craft alongside the Vancouver Philharmonic Orchestra, extending his work as a cellist.

‘Grade Five And The Axe’ is playful and exciting, carving a new path for Plain Mister Smith.

Speaking on the release, he explains: kids get up to crazy things.  A blurry memory of getting drunk in the woods in Grade Five while a friend swung an axe around, and maybe at some point believing the Ax has splintered me in two…”
