Placebo frontman Brian Molko is reportedly been sued by Italian Prime Minister Giorgio Meloni.
The band played Italy’s Sonic Park festival last month, and Brian Molko seemingly made an onstage pronouncement against the politician. According to the BBC, the Italian Prime Minister has now taken legal action against the singer.
Brian Molko seemingly addressed her election win, labelling her a “piece of shit, fascist, racist”. Police in Turin then investigated whether this counted as insulting state institutions – in Italy, defaming the government, parliament, courts, or army can draw a fine of up to to €5,000.
Giorgio Meloni leads the Brothers Of Italy party, which rose to power as part of a coalition after the Italian elections last year. Identified as a Hard Right party, they have amplified negative language around migrants and asylum seekers, while reportedly peppering Brothers of Italy loyalists to top positions in the public broadcaster.
Giorgio Meloni has not commented publicly on the row.
Placebo have made no statement on the reports. The band’s most recent album ‘Never Let Me Go’ was released in 2022.
