PJ Harvey has spoken about picking up the second Mercury trophy of her career.

One of the biggest awards on the music calendar, the winner of the Barclaycard Mercury Music Prize was finally announced last night. PJ Harvey scooped the award with her album ‘Let England Shake’ winning the prize for the second time in his career.

The singer previously won the award for ‘Stories From The City, Stories From The Sea’ in 2001. Returning after a decade, PJ Harvey has become the first person to win the Mercury twice in their career.

Meanwhile, the Mercury sales spike has already taken hold. Online retailers Amazon are reporting a 1000% spike for PJ Harvey’s ‘Let England Shake’ in the immediate aftermath of its Mercury win.

Elsewhere, HMV are predicting an average of a three-to-five fold increase. “All the shortlisted artistes have already benefited to varying degrees from the exposure that nomination brings, and we’ve seen some significant increases in their album sales over the past few weeks” the retailer claimed.

“We’re bound to see another big lift following on from the awards ceremony – on average in the region of three-to-five-fold increases. It doesn’t always follow that the winner will see the biggest rise, though, of course, PJ Harvey is bound to enjoy huge media coverage that will translate into more album sales.”
