Pixies Slow To Record

No progress on new material

Legendary American alt rock group Pixies are nowhere near completing new material, singer Frank Black has admitted.

Pixies famously formed over a mutual love of folk trio Peter, Paul And Mary and hardcore types Husker Du. The band’s inventive blend of surf music, mariachi and punk rock made them icons for a generation.

Inventing the oft repeated quiet-LOUD structure so beloved of Nirvana, the band became hugely influential. Splitting in 1992, the band reformed twelve years later for a series of festival shows.

Since then Pixies dates have been few and far between, although the band recently played at the Isle Of Wight festival. The band are gearing up for the release of a new box set, collecting together their studio albums with rare material.

However singer Frank Black stunned fans recently by suggesting that Pixies could record new material – but only if they felt it matched up well to their previous studio albums.

The frontman argued that a new album could be possible, and that he would love the band to work on soundtracks – possibly in collaboration with Quentin Tarantino.

But the frontman has now admitted that any new material is a long way off, admitting he is “in the dark” about their plans.

“There isn’t really anything to report in that department,” he told MusicRadar. “In terms of any new Pixies records, I’m in the dark. We’re active insofar as our old repertoire is concerned. We’re not active in terms of anything new.”

Since Pixis reformed, Frank Black has kept himself busy with many different projects – including producing the new album by Art Brut. Bass player Kim Deal, meanwhile, has continued to lead The Breeders and recently curated an ATP event.

The seminal group have recorded one track together since reforming – the download only ‘Bam Thwok’ – but Black is dismissive of this song.

“It was all ostensibly for a submission to a film which shall remain unnamed,” he explained of its origins. “I can’t make too much of a big deal out of it, I’m not John Lennon, I don’t play in The Beatles and just because we do one little hiccup doesn’t mean we have to hold a press conference.”
