Seminal alt-rock group PIXIES have shared new song ‘Dregs Of The Wine’.
The track appears on their incoming album ‘Doggerel’, which is set to be released on September 30th. The new LP is the band’s first since 2019’s ‘Beneath The Eyrie’, and was previewed with a tiny Manchester show a few weeks back.
‘Dregs Of The Wine’ is online now, a powerful, punchy piece of songwriting propelled forwards by those slashing guitars, epic power chords that recall The Who’s Pete Townshend in his pomp.
In a first, the song also features a writing credit for guitarist Joey Santiago.
Black Francis comments: “Living in Los Angeles in the ‘90s with my then-wife, hanging out with Joey and his ex-wife, lots of trips to Las Vegas, a lot of drinking, little bit drug taking, some genuine good times.”
The song owes a debt to a sudden moment of inspiration, with Joey immersing himself in the guitar while at home. He recalls: “I guess I was in kind of a zombie state, just playing. After I stopped playing, I put it down and went, ‘Well, that was a fucking waste of time, what a piece of shit I am.’ I beat myself up a lot, but my girlfriend, unbeknownst to me, was recording me. She played it back to me, and I go, ‘Fuck! Hold on a second here! This stuff is good!’”
Tune in now.
