Evan Shornstein, better known as production maestro Photay, has shared new single ‘Air Lock’.
The new age-inflected track is lifted from the Los Angeles-based multi-instrumentalist and composer’s fifth solo album, ‘Windswept’, out September 20th via Mexican Summer. Following the release of ‘Derecho‘ last month, the meandering ‘Air Lock’ continues to illuminate the album’s exploration of natural phenomena, notably ‘wind’. Photay designed sounds to mimic the movement and diaphonous feel of it “as a powerful, deep, unpredictable and at times overwhelming spirit.”
‘Windswept’ is Photay’s first organic solo experiment in a while, following his collaborative works with with Niño and friends, London-based Indian-American drummer Sarathy Korwar, and WEMA, a studio supergroup integrating members of the Afro-Latin dance band Penya and Tanzanian gogo master Msafiri Zawose. ‘Windswept’ was “a response to those experiences, an opportunity to reconnect with his own vision, and apply newfound lessons.”
The album combines homegrown electronic textures and acoustic drumming. Numerous friends and collaborators – Randall Fisher, Will Epstein, Carlos Niño, Laraaji, Nate Mercereau, and Mariana Bragada – were roped in, augmenting the sonic experience with instrumental touches.
