Every so often a song comes along that simply etches itself on your mind, returning to the forefront at odd hours of the night and day.
Phoebe Ridgers new album 'Stranger In The Alps' is a striking offering, matching country-tinged arrangements to some lazer-sharp songwriting.
'Funeral' is perhaps the fulcrum of the record. Opening and closing in the dead of night, it finds the songwriter preparing to perform at the funeral of a young friend.
The simple repeating chord pattern seems to underpin the restlessness of her thoughts, as events spiral out of her control.
"Jesus Christ I'm so blue all the time," she says, before adding: "But that's just how I feel…"
It's a statement of grief but also a statement of survival; an incredibly moving work, something that arrives soaked in the most unbearable poignancy.
Tune in now.
