Phil Collins Take Number One Slot

Manics make do with third place

Phil Collins has seen off competition from Manic Street Preachers to take pole position on the album charts.

Perhaps the main exception to the rule that drummer’s solo careers come to very little, Phil Collins is a global star in his own right. The one time Genesis rhythm keeper has released a series of hit albums, although his commercial peak perhaps passed some time ago.

Returning with a new collection, ‘Going Back’ is a return to his roots. Igniting renewed passion amongst his fans, the album has rocketed into the British album charts in the first week of release.

‘Going Back’ had been engaged in a savage chart battle with Manic Street Preachers. The Welsh trio released their new album ‘Postcards From A Young Man’ last week, scoring positive reviews.

Returning to the sweeping bombast of ‘Everything Must Go’ the album is a fantastic return from the Welsh group. However Manic Street Preachers faltered at the last moment, despite leading the charts for much of the week.

The trio lost out when the weekend’s sales were tallied up, allowing Phil Collins to sneak in and seize control of the number one slot. The Script bounced into second place, leaving Manic Street Preachers to make do with third.

The first week sales are impressive, though, with the Welsh group able to beat off competition from Brandon Flowers and Robert Plant. On the cusp of the Top Ten, Mumford & Sons and The xx retain their popularity with both albums charting highly.

The current Top Ten albums are:

1. Phil Collins – Going Back
2. The Script – Science & Faith
3. Manic Street Preachers – Postcards From A Young Man
4. Brandon Flowers – Flamingo
5. Robert Plant – Band Of Joy
6. Maroon 5 – Hands All Over
7. Linkin Park – A Thousand Suns
8. Katy Perry – Teenage Dream
9. Mumford & Sons – Sigh No More
10. The xx – xx
