Peter Blake Re-Creates ‘Sgt. Pepper’s’ Cover

Featuring his own favourite people

Sir Peter Blake has crafted his own version of the iconic ‘Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’ cover art.

In 1967, The Beatles were the biggest – and certainly the most culturally influential – group on the planet. Retiring from the road, the band set about crafting a concept album which act as a gateway into their new direction.

‘Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’ remains one of the group’s defining albums, and came adorned with a sleeve crafted by Sir Peter Blake.

Perhaps Britain’s foremost Pop Art exponent, Blake pasted together the band’s influences into an iconic mosaic. With his 80th birthday approaching, the artist has now crafted a new version featuring some of his own favourite people.

Unveiled recently, the new work has none of the political or spiritual aims of the original. Rather, Sir Peter Blake wants to create something fun and autobiographical – swapping the scissors ‘n’ glue method of the original for Photoshop.

The BBC caught up with Sir Peter Blake to find out more, and were able to coax the artist into analysing his methods.

Meanwhile, The Guardian have also constructed an interactive Gif which allows fans to uncover the identity of each figure in the new design.

Of course, ‘Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’ now comes with a card to inform you of each person’s identity. The real fun for fans is guessing which person is which, so why not start a list for the new cover in the comments below…
