Indie icon Pete Doherty has hit out against the BNP in a new video message which supports the ongoing Love Music Hate Racism campaign.
As lead singer of The Libertines, Pete Doherty helped inspire a generation of musicians. Sure, the whole Arcadian dream kind of fell apart in the end, but way back when the nation was kept riveted by his celestial vision.
Like it or not, Pete Doherty remains a supremely gifted (and important) songwriter. Releasing his first ever solo album earlier this year the indie icon dug out his trusty acoustic to craft ‘Grace / Wastelands’ one of the most revealing albums of his career.

Pete Doherty has been busy of late supporting the charity Love Music Hate Racism. Set up in order to educate young people on different cultures through music, the organisation recently held a massive festival in Stoke.
The upcoming European elections could well see the British National Party gain a record share of the vote. The party has been heavily criticised due to the racist language of its members and the anti-immigration policies its leaders espouse.
The BNP have targeted Stoke as a place they could make significant gains in, with the massive concert designed to show residents that there are other options. Amongst the headliners were Kelly Rowland and Pete Doherty, who changed the words to the Libertines classic ‘What A Waster’ in order to get his point across.
Now in a new video message to fans indie icon Doherty again condemns racism, recalling a time when he attended a football match and witness fans abusing former Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Carlton Palmer.
“I just felt completely feared at 10,000 people making monkey noises at a kid,” he said. “I just remember thinking, ‘I’m living in an evil world’.”
“I love music and I hate racism. And I love Love Music Hate Racism.”
Speaking about his work with Love Music Hate Racism the singer stated that he enjoys “doing what I can to help propel the momentum of people actively fighting for a cause they believe in”
The British council elections, as well as the European elections, take place today (June 4th).
