'The Most Incredible Thing' due

Pet Shop Boys are set to release their new ballet soundtrack 'The Most Incredible Thing' on March 14th.

Pet Shop Boys were never really just a pop act. Steeped in art history, Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe would pepper their lavish stage shows with references to concepts far beyond the Top 40.

Relaxing into their status as elder statesmen, Pet Shop Boys are plotting to embark on their first ballet. The duo have long had an intensely visual element to their live show, with the upcoming collaboration perhaps being an inevitability.

'The Most Incredible Thing' is a collaboration with choreographer Javier De Frutos and Britain’s leading dance theatre, Sadler’s Wells. Based on a story by Hans Christian Anderson the production will premiere later this Spring.

Running between March 17th and 26th, 'The Most Incredible Thing' will use the Saddler's Wells theatre.

Work began on the ballet back in 2007, after then Royal Ballet principal, Ivan Putrov, asked Neil Tennant if Pet Shop Boys would consider writing a piece of music for him to dance to at Sadler's Wells.

'The Most Incredible Thing' began soon after, with Act One completed in 2008. The rest was finished last year, with Pet Shop Boys opting for a typically lavish mixture of electronics and orchestra.

“This is a very exciting project to be part of" said the Pet Shop Boys. "In the past we have written dance music so to write music for a ballet seems like a logical development. Also we have always been fascinated by giving our music a theatrical context.”

Due to be released as a standalone album, 'The Most Incredible Thing' will open on March 17th.
