Pet Shop Boys may have come away from the recent Brit awards clutching a gong, but according to our new interview with the band the pair have not yet made their peace with such ceremonies.
The duo formed in the early 80s, keen to blend dancefloor styles with thoughtful, often melancholic lyrics. Pet Shop Boys went on to become a British chart institution, scoring hit after hit in the 80s and 90s.
However when the first ever Brit Award ceremony rolled around in 1987 Chris Lowe decided to stay at home and watch Neil Tennant collect the award on his own.
“I didn’t go to the first one because I don’t approve of awards. I was being consistent. ‘West End Girls’ got an award and I stayed at home and watched it on television. I watched Neil get the award.”
“None of that, ‘Unfortunately he can’t be with you’; it’s just like, ‘I don’t want to be there!’” he says before erupting into a fit of laughter.”
Chris Lowe went on to say “We only go to awards if we got one, that’s our policy. We don’t really approve of awards – they’re a bit too much like a school prize-giving, aren’t they? It’s something that we just rebelled against at the time… It’s not why you do something, is it?”
Pet Shop Boys released their new single ‘Love Etc’ out now. The group are set to release their tenth studio album ‘Yes’ soon.
