Australian drum ‘n’ bass mentalists Pendulum are set to push the boundaries on their new album.
Drum ‘n’ bass rarely mixes with rock music. Sure, The Prodigy may have merged the punch of rock with jungle beats, but for every ‘Firestarter’ there are a thousand damp squibs.
The spiritual heirs to the Essex group’s throne, Pendulum delight in mixing the visceral thrill of rock with drum ‘n’ bass beats. Over two albums the band have established themselves as a dancefloor phenomenon, delighting fans but appalling purists on both sides of the dance / rock divide.
Set to return with their as yet untitled third album later this year, Pendulum have kept details of their new material under wraps. Set to play a series of festivals across the summer, the Australian group will unveil new material which they claim is “extreme”.
Speaking to the BBC Gareth McGrillen said: “Where it’s rock it’s like extreme – like heavy metal and death metal. But where its dance-y, it’s straight out of Ibiza.”
“That sounds like it’s really confused but its not – it comes together concisely.”
Pendulum took time off the road last year to work on new material, with the band keen to point out that drum ‘n’ bass is in itself one of the most “extreme” forms of dance music around.
“We’ve always had a real passion for extreme music. We got into drum ‘n’ bass because it was the most extreme form of dance music. Our last record was like rock ‘n’ roll influenced dance music, this record we’ve just taken it a step further.”
“It’s been the most fun of all three. I’m really proud of this body of work.”
Pendulum are set to release their new album on May 24th.
