Returning grunge behemoths Pearl Jam have launched a new short film containing material from their eagerly anticipated new album.
Pearl Jam were one of America’s most successful rock groups during the 90s. Formed from the ashes of several Seattle groups, the band struck gold with their debut album ‘Ten’ which became an enormous hit.
One of the major moments in the grunge boom, Pearl Jam followed ‘Ten’ with a career laden with critically acclaimed recordings. The band may have had some early detractors – notably Kurt Cobain – but Pearl Jam have shaken off this criticism to become one of the most respected acts in America.
Returning to the studio last year, the band recruited old friend Brendan O’Brien on production. Fresh from working with Bruce Springsteen, O’Brien is capable of adding some muscular sheen to Pearl Jam’s strident songwriting.
To date little has been heard of the new material. Recording was halted after bass player Jeff Ament was the victim of robbery and assault outside of the studio. Shocked, Pearl Jam took time off to allow Ament to recover.
However the new album is now finished and comes as the group look back on their illustrious history. A lavish re-issue of ‘Ten’ was scheduled for earlier this year, with a host of re-releases planned for the run up to their 20th anniversary in 2011.
A new short film shows the band working on new material. Shown on MySpace, the film contains excerpts from three tracks including ‘Just Breathe’, ‘Got Some’ and the album’s lead single ‘The Fixer’.
In addition to this, the film also shows Pearl Jam working in their studio and wandering around their native Seattle. In it, singer Eddie Vedder talks about his songwriting process claiming it was like “capturing lightning in a bottle… (the songs) were easy to write, lucky for me they were evocative of something right away”.
