Paul Weller Named Mercury Favourite

The xx slide to second

Iconic songwriter Paul Weller has been installed as the bookmakers favourite to win the Barclaycard Mercury Prize.

Paul Weller is enjoying a curious renaissance. At the turn of the Millennium the Modfather seemed to be disappearing from view, releasing a number of lacklustre recordings and even making a covers album.

However over the past few years Paul Weller has roared back with some of the most acclaimed releases of his solo career. Scooping the BRIT Award for ‘Best British Male’ in 2009, the singer could now add the Mercury to this honours list.

Nominated for his album ‘Wake Up The Nation’ the solo artist was initially an outside bet. The xx were installed as favourites by William Hill, with Dizzee Rascal in second place with his album ‘Tongue N Cheek’.

With the winner set to be announced tonight (September 7th) bookmakers have had a last minute change of heart. Dizzee Rascal has plummeted to an astonishing 40/1, making him a complete outside.

Meanwhile, The xx have fallen to second place as betting continues on a possible Paul Weller triumph. The iconic songwriter is now listed at 1/10 making ‘Wake Up The Nation’ a strong favourite.

The shortlist has been the topic of debate, with both Laura Marling and her boyfriend Marcus Mumford nominated. Laura Marling is given odds of 12/1, making her fourth behind Kendal group Wild Beasts.

Meanwhile Mumford & Sons have been given odds of 14/1 for their vastly successful album ‘Sigh No More’. One of the biggest debut releases from a British act in 2009, it is still selling strongly.

Other acts nominated include Manchester band I Am Kloot, whose new album ‘Sky At Night’ was produced by members of Elbow. Foals are given odds of 25/1, placing them level with Villagers and Biffy Clyro.

The winner of the Barclaycard Mercury Prize will be announced later tonight (September 7th).
