Paul Weller will release new album ’66’ this summer.
The songwriter remains steadfastly creative, refusing to retread old ground. 2008’s ’22 Dreams’ brought a recalibration, with subsequently projects veering between pastoral English folk and twinkling, retro-futurist electronics.
New album ’66’ however seems to dig into his bedrock. Constructed at his studio, the title is a reference to his age, and it will land on May 24th – the day before his 66th birthday.
Guests include Suggs, Noel Gallagher and Bobby Gillespie, while recordings benefited from the input of Orcadian composer Erland Cooper and arrangements from Hannah Peel.
Spinning the dials once more, this new chapter kicks off with ‘Soul Wandering’. If recent work has broadened his scope, this track allows Paul Weller the chance to kick back into his central influences – biting guitar lines that hark back to the Jam, wonderful Hammond organ, gospel backing vocals, and a lyric that seethes with purpose.
Pure, unadulterated Mod, ‘Soul Wandering’ looks to previous solo highlights – his self-titled record, for example – while also offering something new.
Another thing to note: renowned Pop Art guru Sir Peter Blake designs the cover, having previously worked with Paul on the ‘Stanley Road’ artwork.
