Patti Smith has prepared new retrospective album ‘Outside Society’ – due for release on September 12th.
Patti Smith is truly unique. The singer came of age in the post-Beat environment, initially finding acclaim as a performance poet. Later entering rock music, her direct approach became a vital component of punk rock.
‘Horses’ (1975) remains a perennial touchstone, but the singer’s wider work is also worth investigating. Later removing herself from the music industry, Patti Smith’s return has resulted i some fascinating releases.
Spread between two labels – Arista and Columbia – there has never been a single disc collecting her finest tracks: until now. Patti Smith has taken a direct input in ‘Outside Society’ which gathers a mixture of acclaimed work and lesser heralded tracks.
Due for release on September 12th, the album contains 18 songs and moves from her earliest work to 2007’s covers collection ‘Twelve’. Newly re-mastered by award-winning engineer Greg Calbi and Patti Smith band member Tony Shanahan, the entire project was overseen by the legendary performer herself.
Penning some intimate notes for the release, Patti Smith has added a personal touch to the new collection. Hit single ‘Because The Night’ was apparently inspired by her future husband Fred ‘Sonic’ Smith.
“Bruce Springsteen gave me a great gift in allowing me to lend verses to his beautifully constructed anthem. My contribution was written for my future husband, Fred ‘Sonic’ Smith. Though we have performed it hundreds of times, the strong response it draws always makes it fresh and exciting to sing.”
Due for release on September 12th, ‘Outside Society’ follows a high profile period for the singer. Patti Smith released her autobiographical novel ‘Just Kids’ last year to enormous acclaim, with the singer apparently working on a screenplay after receiving numerous offers from film studios.
