Orbury Common will release debut album ‘Sylvan Chute’ on June 7th.
The experimental pairing blend future-facing electronics with hints of the ancient – imagine Weird Walk reconfigured for a post-rave landscape and you’d be close. Tapping into the ley lines that underpin subterranean creative cultures, the production duo made their bow with an outstanding EP on Prah Recordings over a year ago.
Now Emlyn Bainbridge and Josh Day-Jones have reconvened, finishing work on their debut album. Out on June 7th, ‘Sylvan Chute’ was built in a handful of different locations, including their native Bristol and PRAH’s own studio in Margate.
New song ‘The Resident’ is out now – parallels could include Pye Corner Audio or Boards Of Canada, but there is something distinctive and singular about Orbury Common’s work. A song whose origins, they say, “date back years, arguably centuries” it grew through repeated improvisatory work in their live sets.
The duo comment…
The original version, which was a fixture of our live set in 2023, featured the verse’s looping bells, bass synth and beat, alongside ancient Gregorian chant, the melody of which we later emulated when writing our own vocals.
Our lyrics and unison vocals came together in a session at the PRAH Foundation in Margate, describing a dream-like vision of a crumbling mythic landscape, through a yearning, reaching lens – a theme that recurs often across ‘Sylvan Chute’.
The video for ‘The Resident’ was made by Alfie Dwyer, who has recently produced visuals for Aphex Twin and Eric Andre – perfectly matching the music’s core enigma, you can tap in below.
Catch Orbury Common at Crofter’s Rights in Bristol on February 27th, or London’s Two Pals on March 8th.
