Only The Poets Kick Off A New Era With ‘I Keep On Messing It Up’

It plays on notions of light and shade...

Only The Poets return with new single ‘I Keep On Messing It Up’.

The four-piece recently played an ultra-intimate show in London, hitting legendary Kings Cross venue the Scala. The show sold out instantly, with fans invited to “experience the future” by debuting eight new songs live for the first time ever.

New single ‘I Keep On Messing It Up’ is out now, and it comes ahead of a massive run of European dates in Spring.

A song of self-reflection, ‘I Keep On Messing It Up’ finds Only The Poets opening up a fresh chapter – it’s about a break-up, and learning to sweep the broken pieces away.

Penned by Tommy Longhurst after a period of self-reflection, the song finds the band working alongside fellow Reading native, acclaimed songwriter and producer, Dandlion for the first time.

Pop-edged indie reminiscent of those early 1975 bops, there’s a real sense of energy here – the brightness of the melodies moves against the tinge of darkness in the lyric.

“The clue is in the title; there’s a bit of self-sabotage going on,” says Tommy, of the track’s inspiration. “I had another relationship end and I was just really looking back on patterns, and then I started delving into not just my relationships but my whole life.”

“I went into the studio that day and needed to pull it out of me. It wasn’t an easy song to write, it’s not nice to admit that you keep messing things up. The thing that I love about this song – and the reason we wanted to release it first – is that I love the juxtaposition; the undertone of the lyrics being quite dark, but it’s so bouncy and bright and it feels hopeful. It just feels really different for us.”

Tune in now.
