Oliver Sim’s ‘Fruit’ Is A Celebration Of Queer Identity

It's addressed to his younger self...

UK artist Oliver Sim has shared his latest single, ‘Fruit’.

Produced by Jamie xx, the song is the newest endeavour by the vocalist and bassist for The xx. ‘Fruit’ is a dreamy pop song, filled with retro vibes and an 80s touch celebrating queer identity penned to his younger self. Visions of self-acceptance are especially clear in the video directed by Yann Gonzalez.

The director comments: “Oliver and I have so much in common: we love pop culture, horror films and we used to be femme kids before turning into proud queer adults…”

“So, when he asked me to work on his poignant solo tracks, most of the ideas popped up quite naturally and the ‘Fruit’ video became this magic tale of liberation that the lyrics and the emotionally driven music already implied. The song and the TV show here are like a multi-faceted mirror where Oliver and the kid, the live performance with its crew and flirtatious TV host, the 35mm film and the Ikegami video all shine and merge in order to create the same exhilarating feeling of being freed.”

Oliver Sim’s new single follows his debut, ‘Romance With A Memory’, released in March. Making moves and advancing his career, Sim will play his first-ever solo show in London at the Shoreditch Town hall on May 10th before making his way to Paris to play at the Gaite Lyrique on May 11th.

The artist will also perform at the SchwuZ in Berlin on May 13th, Bowery Ballroom in New York on May 15th before ending his intimate tour at the Masonic Lounge in Los Angeles on May 17th.

Speaking on his shows, Sim says he will be “joined by some very talented new friends” and will be playing his “extensive back catalogue of two songs” as well as the promise of “something extra”.
