Comedian Russell Brand’s performance at the MTV Video Music Awards in Los Angeles has found an unlikely defender in the form of Oasis guitarist Noel Gallagher.
The comedian came under fire from American commentators for using his role as host to send out political messages. Amongst the more controversial topics discussed was the upcoming US presidential race, resulting in a joke which referred to current President George W Bush as a “retarded cowboy”.
Unsurprisingly, the Americans were relatively unamused by Brand’s routine, but Noel Gallagher has stepped in to defend him. On a blog on the official Oasis site the guitarist writes:
“If Chris Rock, for example, says that kind of thing everybody laughs because they think they should, but if it’s a man who’s dressed up like a vampire’s lamp-shade? Well? He was wasted on the shower of God-fearing, corporate hot-dogs anyway.”
Gallagher also revealed that it may take him three weeks to recover from an onstage attack in Toronto.
