British folk legend Norma Waterson has died.

Born in Hull and brought up with her grandmother, singing – and the folk tradition – was virtually in Norma Waterson's DNA.

A member of famed family group The Watersons, her commitment to the emotional core of the song made her one of the folk revival's most spirited and influential performers.

Marrying songwriter Martin Carthy, the two provided a hinge for English folk music across seven decades, an enormous cultural debt from two extremely humble souls.

Norma Waterson has suffered numerous health issues over the past few years, while the pandemic's impositions on live performance put the family – which includes daughter, and inspirational folk musician Eliza Carthy – in difficult financial straits.

Fans rallied via an online appeal, but news of Norma Waterson's death was confirmed by numerous sources earlier today.

It's a huge loss – a pivotal figure within the survival and evolution of English folk music, Norma Waterson's recorded work builds into something truly inspirational.

Rest in power, Norma Waterson. Our thoughts are with her family, and her many friends.
