Noel Gallagher Praises Credit Crunch

Claims crisis fuels great music

Oasis guitarist Noel Gallagher has claimed that he hopes the current financial crisis will continue – as it may inspire better music.

The current recession has lead to plenty of doom and gloom in the regular financial assessments, with journalists often targeted for being overly negative. Mind you, given the numbers involved in the banking crisis, it would be difficult to be anything else!

Noel Gallagher has managed to find a potential bright side, however, pointing out that Oasis began in the middle of the last recession in the early 90s.

“I hope the financial crisis gets a bit worse – at least we’ll get a few good albums out of it,” he told That’s Shanghai.

He added: “When we started in the early 90s it was a pretty grim time when the Conservative (party) was still in power. Times of crisis usually bring out the best in music and fashion and politics and things like that.”

The old theory that poverty = musical innovation does sometimes appear to hold water. The late 70s for example were a period of political and economic turmoil, yet produced punk, disco and countless classic albums.

However, that period also resulted in the Winter Of Discontent, the rise of the Far Right in the developed world and race riots in Britain’s cities. Plus, if you actually check the charts then they were chock full of complete nonsense!
