Grunge legends Nirvana have confirmed details of the newly expanded edition of their debut album ‘Bleach’.
Nirvana remain one of the most potent American rock acts ever to pick up a guitar. Blending the fury of punk, the melody of The Beatles and the primordial sludge of Black Sabbath the band brought grunge into the mainstream.
Their album ‘Nevermind’ sparked a revolution, dislodging Michael Jackson from the top spot on the Billboard charts in 1991. Becoming a landmark album it spawned the iconic single ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’.
However the band’s origins didn’t suggest this level of stardom. Founded by Kurt Cobain, the group earned a strong following in their native Seattle. Attracting the attention of the label Sub Pop the pair would enter into a partnership which would redefine American rock music.
Debut album ‘Bleach’ was released in 1989, and caused a stir on the underground rock scene. Earning celebrity fans such as Sonic Youth, Nirvana soon found themselves as a the name to drop among the punk cognoscenti.
Twenty years on ‘Bleach’ remains a thrilling listen. Containing much promise, Cobain’s lyrical and songwriting skills are intact first time round. Now the album is due to given the prominence it deserves with a new re-issue.
The newly expanded double album will contain a previously unreleased live recording of the group’s February 9, 1990 performance at Portland’s Pine Street Theatre. Featuring a raft of early material, it captures Nirvana in full flight just as word was beginning to spread about the young trio.
