Orchestral comeback planned

Celebrated American singer Nina Nastasia is to release her orchestral new album ‘Outlaster’ on June 7th.

Nina Nastasia began by writing songs at home, crafting stark nuggets of alt country balladeering. The singer’s exquisite voice was matched to inventive and deeply literate material which won her critical plaudits.

A favourite of the late John Peel, the American singer’s collaborations with Steve Albini have resulted in five stunning albums. Taking time off, Nina Nastasia recently confirmed details of a series of new recordings.

Due for release on June 7th, forthcoming album ‘Outlaster’ is a deeply orchestral affair. Recorded once again in Steve Albini’s Electrical Audio studios, the material contains contributions from Los Angeles instrumentalist and arranger Paul Bryan.

Arranging the material for a small orchestra, Nina Nastasia’s voice was augmented by string and woodwind quartets, finding the perfect complement for her touring band.

Working with drummer Jay Bellerose and guitarist Jeff Parker, Nina Nastasia’s material is typically sparse at times running close to the timeless literature of the Old West.

Containing ten tracks, ‘Outlaster’ is a an ode to perseverance. A lush and varied affair, it contains orchestral arrangements and even tango rhythms on album standout ‘This Familiar Way’.

At times recalling the arrangements of jazz legend Gil Evans, Nina Nastasia’s material hints at late folk icon Phil Ochs. A deeply inventive artist, the American singer’s return marks another vital chapter in the career of a stunning voice.
