Via Kickstarter...
Neil Young

Neil Young has long been critical of digital formats.

Yet this wasn't due to some long held grudge against technology - rather, the songwriter felt that the available technology wasn't being used to its full advantage.

Tiring of the limitations mp3 formatting can place on his music, Neil Young teamed up with Ayre Acoustics to work on an alternative.

Much discussed, Pono is set to be unveiled at (where else?) SXSW. As Pitchfork points out, the PonoPlayer will contain 128GB of memory with pre-orders opening on March 15th via Kickstarter.

Each player will contain space for "1,000 to 2,000 high-resolution digital-music albums" while the device also features zero-feedback circuitry and a digital filter that stops "unnatural pre-ringing".

PonoMusic is the accompanying music media management system, with the set up offering "the finest quality, highest-resolution digital music from both major labels and prominent independent labels".
