Nabil Ayers Launches Identified Podcast

The first three episodes are online now...

Music executive Nabil Ayers has launched a new podcast.

The project is called Identified, and follows his excellent 2022 memoir My Life In The Sunshine. In the book, the music industry figure explored his distant relationship with his father, the jazz musician Roy Ayers, unpicking his sometimes complicated mixed-race identity in the process.

Taking his book on the road, the new podcast is born out of this energy. “On my book tour, I did about 70 in-person events. As time went on, I found that after hearing my family story, people were coming up to me to tell their own,” Ayers says. “Some were wildly non-traditional, while others were heartbreaking. I began to realise that there’s an infinite number of ways that people define family. Identified is a place for people to share these stories.”

The first three episodes of Identified are out now, with guests in the series set to include Khruangbin’s Laura Lee, Foo Fighters’ Nate Mendel, Reggie Watts, Amen Dunes, Reyna Tropical, Hrishikesh Hirway, Dawn Richard, Jad Abumrad, Nabihah Iqbal and Norman Brannen.

A trailer is online, with Identified guest Nabihah Iqbal commenting:

“We find out those stories because we’re curious and they have a direct impact on us – because they’re part of our family stories. When your own lived experience is so entrenched with who you are and what you look like, those things are more poignant to you.”
