Eel Pie Island’s finest bunch of indie songsmiths Mystery Jets have caused chaos on their first ever tour of Mexico.
The indie group seem to be enjoying more success in Central America than they have in their home country recently. Despite strong reviews and impressive sales for second album ‘Twenty One’ the group were dropped by record label 679.
However, it seems that their fan base in Mexico have held the faith. A recent show there descended into pandemonium, after fans who had bought tickets for previous cancelled shows turned up expecting entry.
“We didn’t know what to expect because none of us had ever been there,” frontman Blaine Harrison told NME.
“But we had a really good turn out for our shows. We also played a live radio station gig in Mexico City that turned into a bit of a riot,” he said.
“People had scanned our photos from the internet and put them on their T-shirts,” Harrison said. “They’re quite obsessive down there.”
Mexican fans are up against it – the country has a notorious attitude towards young people assuming emo / alternative fashions, making the simple act of being an indie fan an extreme statement.
Mystery Jets are now touring America, playing a select band of dates including the famous Bowery Ballroom in New York. The band will then return to London to begin work on their forthcoming album.
