My Morning Jacket guitarist Carl Broemel is putting the finishing touches to his solo album ‘All Birds Say’.
My Morning Jacket are much more than just a vehicle for Jim James. Sure, the singer’s glistening voice is a thing of beauty but the band’s wide ranging, versatile songwriting is a group effort.
Set to re-visit their back catalogue over five nights in New York this November, My Morning Jacket are currently on downtime. Rather than rest on the couch, guitarist Carl Broemel has written a new solo album.
‘All Birds Say’ is steeped in Southern melancholy, with songs that equally recall bluegrass and Nick Drake. Soft, acoustic based material is demonstrates just how strong Broemel’s songwriter can be.
Other members of My Morning Jacket appear, with Jim James set to add his unmistakable vocals. Speaking to Spin, Carl Broemel reflected on the band’s involvement with his solo material.
“They gave me really honest feedback about the music as it was coming together,” he said. “Their blessing, their collective thumbs-up helped me get the confidence to put myself out there.”
Carl Broemel is a natural perfectionist, but with time drawing in he needed help to complete the tracklisting. Trying different combinations, Jim James finally helped his band mate to finish the album.
“I was kind of desperate at the end because I had to turn in the album, and to me, the sequence was super crucial,” he said. “Jim came back with a really interesting sequence that basically ended up being what I used.”
Set to be released later this year, Carl Broemel’s ‘All Birds Say’ will be supported by a handful a Stateside dates. Sadly, there are currently no plans to bring the album to the other side of the Atlantic.
