My Morning Jacket, REM For New Orleans Album

New compilation due

My Morning Jacket are amongst the many acts assembled on a new album in aid of New Orleans.

One of the 20th century’s most iconic musical hubs, New Orleans gave birth to jazz. A melting pot of cultures, the city stood apart from the United States as almost a unique country in its own right.

However back in 2005 Hurricane Katrina brought huge damage to the city. Causing enormous devastation, rising sea levels breached defences bringing wide scale destruction to the area.

The city is still attempting to pull itself together, with a raft of new music festivals bringing some hope back to New Orleans. Now a new compilation album aims to keep the Big Easy in the limelight.

‘Dear New Orleans’ will be released later this year, with all profits being diverted towards funds aiding the city’s recovery. Work is still ongoing, with many thousands of people losing everything they’d ever owned in the flood.

Marking the 5th anniversary of the Hurricane, the 31 track album contains some unique material. My Morning Jacket have donated ‘Carnival Time’ recorded with the Preservation Hall Jazz Band.

Elsewhere, R.E.M. bass player Mike Mills leads a new supergroup through a version of ‘Ohio’. Joined by MC5 guitarist Wayne Kramer, the group plays a passionate rendition of the classic Neil Young track.

Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy also adds a track to the album, while alt country legend Steve Earle donates ‘Dixieland’. Rage Against The Machine guitarist Tom Morello appears under his solo guise of The Nightwatchman, with new track ‘Destruction’ appearing on the forthcoming album ‘Dear New Orleans’.
