Frontman of Southern rockers My Morning Jacket and quirky new wave types Devo have announced that they will play benefits this month in support of US presidential candidate Barack Obama.
My Morning Jacket frontman Jim James is set to play two acoustic performances in aid of the Obama VIctory Fund. The singer has well known liberal beliefs, and was chosen by the UN to wear the ‘belt of peace’ – a pice of clothing designed to promote well being. He wore it during the band’s celestial performance at this summer’s T In The Park.
Quirky new wave types Devo have also come out in support of the Democratic politician. Best known for their ‘Whip it’ hit, the band have carved out a career playing playing incisive if off-kilter pop music. Devo issued the following statement on their website:
“At a time when the country is facing an economic crisis of historic proportions and soldiers are returning from service to bleak job prospects, DEVO is converging on Akron to channel their energies with a concert called ‘Duty Now for the Future’.
“All proceeds will benefit the Summit County Democratic Party in their efforts to create a future filled with hope and responsibility by electing Barack Obama as President of the United States.”
