Hotly tipped dubstep team Mount Kimbie are giving away a new remix ahead of their latest EP.
Dubstep has two distinct strands. There’s the bass heavy wobblers, the dancefloor stompers which first erupted from the soundsystems.
However the scene also embraces other new forms of sub bass. The fractured post-garage of Burial is just one example, with hotly tipped newcomers Mount Kimbie also devoting themselves to something more chilled.
Live, the duo’s bass heavy techno oscillations are intensely unusual. Using live instrumentation and caught loops Mount Kimbie are one of the few groups to make dubstep work in a live environment.
Snapped up by Hot Flush, Mount Kimbie are set to release two EPs of remix material. Giving the duo’s material a fresh new spin, the London based group are re-worked by a stellar cast.
Sometimes collaborator James Blake renews his relationship with Mount Kimbie, tackling their track ‘Maybes’. Also taking part are production team Instra:mental, while Tama Sumo and Prosumer take on ‘William’.
Perhaps the pick of the bunch is a remix from New York kingpin FaltyDL. With his initial blast of Planet Mu material still fresh in our ears, the producer has turned Mount Kimbie’s ‘Serged’ into a woozy slice of garage.
