Mother Tongues have shared new indie pop jewel ‘A Heart Beating’.
The duo – Lukas Cheung and vocalist/bassist Charise Aragoza – met at a DIY show almost a decade ago, and remained friends ever since. Embarking on different projects, this is the first time they’ve fully aligned – and the first time Charise has put herself out front.
Debut album ‘Love In A Vicious Way’ is out on July 21st via Wavy Haze, and it blends 80s and 90s indie pop aspects to craft something perfect for 2k23.
Take new single ‘A Heart Beating’. Reminiscent of fellow Canadian types Alvvays, it also leans on The Cure’s imperial pop phase, while also nodding to 90s heroes such as Velocity Girl and the Clueless soundtrack.
Glossy guitar pop with a super-catchy chorus, it also boasts an ultra-colourful video. “‘A Heart Beating’ speaks to how we can find ourselves lost in the feedback loop of regrets and longing,” explains guitarist/vocalist Lukas Cheung. “The chorus repeats like some hypnotic spell calling you back into your body: ‘A heart beating, inside an animal…'”
Carson Teal directs the video, which features a heart devouring itself. He comments: “It’s an exploration of the darker ways we love, the parts with teeth. It possesses you, it’s a pit you fall into. Love overtakes you, this record is about surrendering to that feeling.”
Tune in now.
