Mogwai have confirmed plans for a new direction on their upcoming EP ‘Earth Division’.
Mogwai virtually defined the post-rock template. Sure the band’s output is extremely varied (and the genre itself is difficult to define) but the image of the Scottish group playing quiet-LOUD passages endures.
Returning with their new album ‘Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will’ the Glasgow group went back to basics. Released on their own label, the album was recorded at the Chem19 facility – scene of the ‘Young Team’ sessions.
Mixing Krautrock rhythms with savage, near-metal riffery Mogwai produced one of their most immediate albums to date. Taking off on a world tour, fans could have been forgiven for expecting the band to take a break.
However in a new twist Mogwai have confirmed plans for an unusual new EP. ‘Earth Division’ will be released through their own Rock Action imprint, and could well mark a new direction for the band.
Grappling with electronics, Mogwai have crafted four new tracks which point away from their trademark sound. Mixing a full string section into the material, the Glasgow band could well have completed their quietest statement yet.
Of course, this shouldn’t come as too much of a shock – Mogwai have used electronics before, and Rock Action is home to both electro-rock outfit Errors and the gentle loops of Remember Remember.
Set to be released on September 12th, the new EP comes as Mogwai prepare for two very different live shows. The Glasgow band are set to play a headline date at the Roundhouse on July 23rd as part of the iTunes Festival before taking part in this year’s End Of The Road on September 3rd.
‘Earth Division’ will be released on September 12th, with the EP available on CD, download and 12 inch. Tracklisting:
1. Get To France.
2. Hound Of Winter.
3. Drunk And Crazy.
4. Does This Always Happen?
