Former Velvet Underground drummer Moe Tucker is at the centre of speculation after she appeared to endorse the Tea Party.
An astonishing success story, the Tea Party is yet more evidence of how the internet has altered American politics. A loose-knit reactionary group opposed to state intervention in the economy, the party is set to make enormous gains at the upcoming mid-term elections.
Sparking into action by Barack Obama’s decision to enter the private sector, the Tea Party are the subject of much controversy due to their outspoken dismissal of presidential policy.
Now it seems that Moe Tucker – one time Velvet Underground drummer and icon of cool – has joined the group. The drummer was famed for her primitive approach and tom-boy image, but later slipped into obscurity.
Hailed as an influence by everyone from Brian Eno to Sonic Youth, Moe Tucker is an icon of underground cool. However a television broadcast from Georgia last week appeared to show the drummer endorsing the Tea Party.
Giving her name as Moe Tucker, the woman in the clip has strong pro-Tea Party opinions. At one point the speak rants about Obama’s inexorable march towards socialism.
“I’m furious about the way we’re being led towards socialism. I’m furious about the incredible waste of money when things that we really need and are important get dropped because there’s no money left.”
Fans are divided as to whether this is the Moe Tucker, but the evidence points to this case being likely.
The clip is shot in Tiftin, about 20 miles away from Douglas, Georgia where Moe Tucker moved in 1984. In addition to this, the Tea Party group lists one ‘Moe Tucker’ amongst its members.
