Dance mystic returns

Chilled out dance mystic Moby is set to release his new single ‘Pale Horses’ soon, the latest track to emerge from his new album ‘Little Idiot’.

Moby’s return may have sent a shiver of fear of the spines of some dance snobs, but putting aside any preconceptions revealed ‘Little Idiot’ to be a refreshing album. Shifting away from his big budget releases, the producer has moved back to his his humble home studio.

Of course, being Moby the ‘home’ is a little larger than average and the ‘studio’ is exactly that. Nonetheless the change of surroundings seems to have allowed the musician to get back into the mindframe that produced seminal dance cut ‘Go’ more than a decade ago.

New single ‘Pale Horses’ is more evidence of this. The second track to be lifted from ‘Little Idiot’ the song contains some sparse vocals courtesy of one of Moby’s close friends.

“I wanted the vocals on this song to sound old and almost conversational,” claimed Moby in a statement.

“On ‘Pale Horses’ my friend Amelia is singing; she’s holding a $20 microphone, no headphones, just singing it with me holding the lyrics in front of her pointing to the words. She didn’t know the song before she sang it, so her performance has a vulnerable and almost naïve quality.”

“After recording her vocals i thought they still sounded too polished, so I put her vocals on an old 1/8” tape machine and re-recorded them back into the song. I wanted them to sound as if they were recorded 50 years ago instead of in 2008” he says.

Of course, not everyone is a fan of Moby. Eminem may have kick started the backlash against the producer through lampooning him in some recent videos.

During a press conference in Hong Kong the producer commented on the rapper saying “honestly, if he retired, I think the world of music would be a poorer place. He’s a really fascinating public figure. I’d much rather have public figure musicians like Eminem because at least he’s exciting.”

And the videos, Moby?

“To have the most successful musician in the world dress up like you in a video and sing about you in a song – it was honestly some of the best publicity I’ve ever had!”

Moby is set to release his new single ‘Pale Horses’ on June 22nd.
