Best selling dance producer Moby is set to launch his own label with the release of his forthcoming album ‘Wait For Me’.
Moby first sprang to fame with his hit ‘Go’. A slice of techno that appealed to the masses, it was a global hit and enabled him to work full time on his music.
Now completely overplayed through its use on adverts, 1998’s ‘Play’ album was actually an adventurous blend of styles. Sure, taking gospel samples and layering them over dance beats is passé now, but when Moby did it few people were concerned with cross-pollinating such disparate styles.
The first glimpse fans will get of the new album will be the moody instrumental ‘Shot In The Back Of The Head’. Available soon as a free download, the track will be accompanied by a video shot by legendary film-maker David Lynch.
According to a new statement by Moby, the inspiration for the track – and the album itself – came from a speech by David Lynch. “David was talking about creativity, and to paraphrase, about how creativity in and of itself, and without market pressures, is fine. it seems that too often creative output is judged by how well it accommodates the marketplace, how much market share it commands and how much money it generates.”
“In making this record i wanted to focus on making something that I loved, without really being concerned about how it might be received by the marketplace. as a result it’s a quieter, more melodic, more mournful and more personal record than some of the records I’ve made in the past”
Recorded in his home studio (situated in his spare bathroom) the album is a return to his DIY roots. The cover is a simple design, while friends dropped by to contribute vocals.
A world away from the big budget releases fan have grown used to, ‘Wait For Me’ is an intriguing release by an under-rated artist.
Moby is set to release his new album ‘Wait For Me’ on June 29th.
