Minneapolis based artist MMYYKK takes down performative activism on new single 'Bout Dat'.

Black Lives Matter marches swept across the globe in 2020, propelled by societal injustice and a widespread revulsion at the murder of George Floyd by American police officers.

In its aftermath, however, a strain of performative activism has emerged – think corporations attempting to cash-in on this trend, or merely empty social media posts designed to boost engagement.

MMYYKK has watched this pattern become clear with a sense of disgust, and he channels that on new single 'Bout Day'.

The jazz-tinged arrangement provides some musical flexibility, with those super-smooth trumpet solos conjuring an improvisational reverie.

A very contemporary form of protest song, MMYYKK – it's pronounced 'Mike' – uses this to bolster the directness of his lyricism.

As he puts it, the song is “about being about what you say you’re about and doing what you say you’re going to do – put your money where your mouth is. Be about that action”.

Enlisting a guest spot from fellow Minneapolis creative Vie Boheme, it's a song that takes a no-fucks-given attitude to its limit; “What are you doing? What have you done? I need to know. I wanna see a list of actions. I don’t wanna hear what you gotta say – what you gonna do?”

Tune in now.
