Mitski has sketched out the details of her new album ‘The Land Is Inhospitable And So Are We’.
The songwriter revealed plans for a new album over the weekend, adding a voice note to her regular newsletter. Fan speculation went into overdrive – especially when she revealed that new music was landing this week.
A few moments ago all became clear – new album ‘The Land Is Inhospitable And So Are We’ is out on September 15th through Dead Oceans, featuring 11 new songs.
Available to pre-order now, the record utilised extensive sessions at both the Bomb Shelter in East Nashville and Sunset Sound Studios in Los Angeles. Mitski is the centre of it all, with some tracks augmented by an orchestra arranged and conducted by Drew Erickson.
Intriguing Mitski set the choir parts herself, using a title of 17 voices – 12 in Los Angeles and five in Nashville.
Working with her longtime producer Patrick Hyland, the results will emerge on September 15th.
“The best thing I ever did in my life was to love people,” Mitski says in a press note. “I wish I could leave behind all the love I have, after I die, so that I can shine all this goodness, all this good love that I’ve created onto other people.”
New song ‘Bug Like An Angel’ is online now – assured and moving, it’s a confident return, the work of an artist in full possession of their powers. Moving on from 2022’s ‘Laurel Hell’, it feels both familiar and startlingly new.
At one point she sings, “sometimes a drink feels like family…”
