Minneapolis bedroom funk duo King Pari have shared new single ‘Wait A Minute’.
The group have just signed to powerhouse label Stones Throw, illuminating the relationship with some new material. Steeped in bold, funky musicality, there’s also a jazz-like dexterity to the performance, pushing the song to its limits.
A duo hinging on Joe Paris Christensen and Cameron Kinghorn, their first show was opening for Kamasi Washington, before they’d even decided on a name. Harking back to the musical lineage of their home city, if there’s a hint of Prince in their DNA then that shouldn’t be surprising – given that Joe performed for The Purple One at Paisley Park in his previous band.
A sighing, other-worldly slice of avant funk, ‘Wait A Minute’ uses these wisps of sound to match lyrical directness – it was prompted by the 2020 Minneapolis uprising for George Floyd.
Cameron sings: “Broke and breakin’ / Don’t know if we’re gonna make it / It’s so hard to take it / But what else are you gonna do?”
